Filipino-Canadian Teenager Receives Humanitarian Act Award

13-year-old Martina Ortiz-Luis  received a Humanitarian Act Award in Toronto for using her musical talents in charitable causes.

Since the age of 6, Ortiz-Luis has been raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, typhoon Haiyan victims, and is presently a sponsor for three children.

Cebuana Reigns as Miss Earth 2014

Filipina beauty Jamie Herrell has won the Miss Earth 2014 title.

The Cebuana native represented the country against 84 countries.

As Miss Earth, Herrell will serve as the ambassador to worldwide environmental protection campaigns.

Norte Hangganan ng Kasaysayan Aims for the Oscars

Norte Hangganan ng Kasaysayan, a film directed by Lav Diaz will represent the Philippines in the Oscars, America’s Academy Awards in 2015.

The movie tackles the intertwining stories of a law student, a father and mother.

Philippines is Destination of the Year 

The Philippines has won the Destination of the Year award at the 25th Annual Travel Trade Gazette  (TTG) Travel Awards 2014.

TTG gave the award to the Department of Tourism in ceremonies held in  Bangkok, Thailand.

According to Xander Losaria because of the award, “Foreign investors would be more interested to invest in more business in the country.”

Sarah Geronimo sings Disney’s “The Glow”

Sarah Geronimo, a popular actress and singer, has been chosen to reinterpret Disney’s “The Glow” for a new Disney Princess music video.

Sarah will be the new voice behind the theme song for the animated film, “Tangled.”

“Nakakaproud kasi minsan lang magkaroon ng opportunity na ganito.” Said Nica Nemeyo of COM31. “Unti-unti nang nakikilala yung talent ng mga Pilipino lalo na sa field ng singing”, she added.

DLSU-D is the first Filipino University to be included in the world network of top colleges and universities employing sustainable principles and measures in their educational institutions.

Magkakabaung is the Best Asian Film in Hanoi Festival

Magkakabaung (Coffin Maker) has won the Best Asian Film Award at the 3rd Hanoi Film Festival (HANIFF) in Vietnam.

Magkakabaung director Jason Paul Laxamana received the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) Award.

The Film tackles the story of a casket factory worker and his eight year old daughter.

Maria’s Colorful Banca’s “Ray of Hope”

Maria’s Colorful Banca is an illustrated storybook co-authored by Minnie Francia and 12-year old daughter Ella.

The book tells the story of survivors who had gone through the fury of super typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Philippines. Proceeds from the book sales will go to the survivors.

Radyo Tambuli now accessible in the Phillippines

Radyo Tambuli is a free mobile application that allows listeners worldwide to access radio channels to get updates about the Philippines.

The app enables users to tune in to the Philippine Embassy radio coverage of public meetings, interviews, and even access selected radio stations based in the Philippines.

The app can now be downloaded in the Philippines on any smart phone or tablet with internet access.

“It is actually pretty helpful especially to OFWs. It helps them be updated to whatever is happening here in the Philippines,” said Locsin.

Pinoy Chefs to compete in World Pastry Cup in France

Pastry chefs from the Philippines will be competing for the first time in the prestigious global pastry competition, Coupe Du Monde De La Patisserie (World Pastry Cup) to be held in Lyon, France in January 2015.

Pastry Team PH, Vincente Cahatol, Rizalin Manas Jr. and Bryan Dimayuga will represent the country.
