(3:50PM) Arko mobile app, developed by the Department of Science and Technology’s Project Noah and Filipino company Pointwest Technologies, was one of the 40 winners under the m-inclusion and empowerment category at the recently concluded World Summit Award mobile in Abu Dhabi last February one to three. The app aims to make people aware of flood hazards in their community. The app provides users with flood hazard maps, safe location for evacuation. The Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi said there were over 450 app entries from various countries. The winners were evaluated by the w-s-a for best mobile content solutions showing innovation, creativity and impact.

Amin Hataman’s invention has bested entries from over 40 official entries from dozens of elementary and high school students from around the globe who joined the international inventors ‘competition. Haman’s biodegradable multi-purpose plastic invention won the grand prize at the 8th IYIPO or International Young Inventors Project Olympiad in Georgia, USA. This invention is the biodegradable multi-purpose plastic was developed out of edible coconut which dissolved in three weeks after being exposed to the elements.

(4:03PM) Hope Christian Highschool basketball standout player, Jollo Go, has been invited to join a pool of thirty-nine players from 23 countries to join the first ever basketball without borders global camp at the 2015 NBA all-star weekend in New York city. The five-foot-ten player has already represented the country in various international youth tournaments and was the only Filipino player attending the basketball camp.

(4:06PM) The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) issued a statement on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, that the Philippine government already received the full requested amount of₱ 87,033,570.71 from the US government as compensation for damages caused by the grounding of American Navy ship USS guardian on Tubbataha reef two years ago. According to DFA, the compensation paid by the US government will be utilized for the rehabilitation and maintenance of Tubbataha Reef National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site.
(4:12PM) A resident doctor at a Department of Health regional hospital in Central Philippines has invented a surgical technique to fix bone fractures with the use of nylon cable ties.The nylon cable ties, commercially available as nylon ties used to organize and keep computer cables from tangling, are meant to replace the more expensive stainless steel wires used to strengthen fracture fixation in broken bones with the same healing effect to the bone. The use of nylon cable ties is expected to reduce orthopaedic surgery costs.

(4:39PM) De La Salle University – Dasmariñas (DLSUD) is still the greenest university in the Philippines as it was once again part of GreenMetric Ranking of World Universities released on January 16, 2015. It is also the only university in the Philippines to make it to the top 100 of the list. DLSUD ranked 70th out of the expanded list of 390 universities worldwide, compared to last year’s, university’s first time to enter the list, where it placed 78th out of 301 schools worldwide. The university has also improved its place in Asia from being 22nd last 2014, to 13th place this 2015 in terms of promoting and implementing environmental sustainability initiatives.
