LS Filipiniana Dance Company, to join in an annual culture dance competition
De La Salle University – Dasmarinas’ (DLSU-D) La Salle Filipiniana Dance Company takes part in the annual Philippine Travel Mart – the biggest travel trade and exhibition in the promotion and marketing of domestic and inbound tourism – on September 6 at SMX Convention Center in Pasay, Metro Manila. Spearheaded by Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA), Twenty-sixth Travel Mart PHILTOA – Cultural Dance Competition aims to showcase the talent and creative prowess of students through traditional folklore dance competition which will pay tribute to the country’s rich cultural heritage; in addition, a good opportunity for the participants and members to be exposed to different ways of presenting the Filipino culture.
House of Reps passes bill reverting abandoned fishponds to forestlands
The House of Representatives approved the House Bill no. 5845 on its third and final reading. The abovementioned House Bill shortens the process of restoring fishponds that have been abandoned and unutilized for three years to forestland. According to Bulacan Representative Linabelle Ruth Villarica – who gave authority to the measure – the environmental law should be attuned to the demands of climate change, as well as socio-economic needs for the increase of the people in a community. The said bill is seen to spur socio-economic development.
SC grants public health workers’ appeal
The Supreme Court (SC) voided government policies that lowered public health workers’ benefits. Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta, discussed in a 19-page decision, voiding provisions issued and implemented by Department of Health (DOH), Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and Civil Service Commission (CSC) for violating Republic Act 7305 (Magna Carta of Public Health Workers). The SC granted the petition of officers and members of the Philippine Public Health Association Inc. (PPHAI) to gain such benefits on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. The SC agreed with petitioners that the DBM-DOH circular should be rejected as it made the threat to pay health workers that depend on their actual days of exposure and involvement to any risk.
Comelec scraps internet voting for 2016 elections
The plans to use the internet as a medium for absentee voting on the 2016 elections should be scrapped, according to Commission on Elections (COMELEC). Politician Lawyer Romulo Macalintal noted that the traditional way of voting should be practiced among the overseas Filipino Workers; thus, using internet as a voting medium would pose problems on security and the real identity of the voter. He also added that it will take a very long time before the Philippines can finally accept the internet as a medium for voting.
Cotto and Canelo will be the ‘fight of the year’ — Roach
Hall of Famer coach Freddie Roach take pride that the fight of Miguel Cotto and Miguel Canelo on November 21 showdown in Las Vegas will be the ‘fight of the year’. He said that Cotto is in the right condition. Roach believes that the fans will enjoy the fight because they will bring a fight with action.
