VACC founding president Lauro Vizconde dies at 77

Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) founding president Lauro Vizconde dies last Saturday, Feb. 13, after suffering from cardiac arrest on Friday. He was 77. He was rushed to UniHealth Paranaque City and was confined at their intensive care unit. According to the Vizconde Family, his attack was caused by his Diabetes and pulmonary complications. Vizconde established VACC after the murders of his wife and two daughters in their home back in 1991.

Filipino priest gives Pope Francis “Lolo Kiko” doll

Fr. Robert Young, a Filipino priest studying in Rome, gifted Pope Francis a ‘Lolo Kiko’ doll at Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, according to CBCPNews.

When the pontiff visited the Philippines in January last year, Lolo Kiko was the nickname given by Filipinos to Pope Francis.

Taking his Doctorate in Canon Law at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Young said he took the opportunity to give the doll to the 79-year-old pontiff.

Pope Francis visited the cathedral for the annual meeting with the Roman clergy.

The pontiff had to prepare for his apostolic visit to Mexico so he excused himself after his speech. When he was walking down from the platform, Young ran and shouted “Santo Padre.”

As Young approached Pope Francis, “Here’s a gift for you, made in the Philippines by a friend of mine,” he said in Italian.

The pope smiled. Young said he was happy because “Pope Francis remembers the Philippines so we with Lolo Kiko.”

The doll came from the priest’s friend in Manila, who made the Lolo Kiko dolls as souvenirs for the papal visit, Young said.

DOH to distribute free Dengue vaccines in public schools

The Department of Health (DOH) will start its distribution of free Dengue vaccines to students from public schools on April this year.

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Janette Garin said that the Dengvaxia vaccine will be given to selected Grade IV students in National Capital Region (NCR), Region III, and Region IV-A which got the highest transmission of Dengue last year.

An orientation will be held to both parents and teachers before the actual vaccine implementation. The said vaccine will already cover the four types of Dengue.

6.5 magnitude quake trembles Eastern Indonesia

A strong earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia that apparently knocking out telephone, radio communications and roads that are not fit to access on islands near the epicenter last Friday, Feb. 12.

There are no records injured during the earthquake, according to the residents that was confirmed by the spokesperson of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Also according to the US Geological Survey, the 6.5 magnitude earthquake has a depth of 30 km and it was recorded to reach 3km from the Andekantor in the Sumba, East of Nusa Tenngara.

Tabuena, Nietes and Donaire receive PSA awards

World Class Golfer, Miguel Tabuena and the two boxing icons Donnie Nietes and Nonito Donaire Jr. shared the spotlight at the annual Philippine Sportswriter Association award night last Saturday, Feb. 13. The three athletes received their awards and were named as Athletes of the Year by the PSA. The Awards Night was held at One Esplanade at Pasay City. Tabuena thanked the PSA for recognizing athletes like him and for the opportunity to share the stage with the 2 boxing icons. WBO light flyweight champion, Nietes wish to have more athletes’ choices next year while Donaire considers the PSA as his inspiration in life especially for his career.
